Earlier this month, West Village Partners announced that they concluded the purchase of 70 Mississauga Road South, a 72-acre former industrial waterfront site in Port Credit.
West Village Partners consists of Kilmer Group, Dream Unlimited, Diamond Corp, and Fram + Slokker. Kilmer Group and Dream Unlimited probably look familiar next to one another because they teamed up at Canary District (Athlete’s Village) in Toronto’s east end for the Pan Am & Parapan Am Games.
With Canary District, they aimed to develop a truly complete community where people could live, work, and play. With a couple condos complete and retail opening, it looks like they are on track! You can expect the same approach at West Village in Mississauga. The plan adheres to the Inspiration Port Credit vision, which is “A lakefront urban neighbourhood of landscapes, meeting places, living, working, learning and drawing people to the water’s edge to play.”
“We’re determined to deliver a special community that will raise the bar for architectural and design excellence and to transform this section of the Port Credit shoreline into a dynamic waterfront community with places to live, work, shop and play,” says West Village Partners Spokesperson Ken Tanenbaum, Vice Chairman of Kilmer Group.
West Village will feature 2,500 residential units, housing approximately 5,000 people. The residential development will consist of townhomes, mid-rise, and high-rise projects. There will also be 200,000 square feet of commercial space, including retail and office.
“The unveiling of the draft plan for this new development is proof that Mississauga is a city in demand and that people continue to choose Mississauga to raise a family, find a well-paying job and enjoy an unrivalled quality of life,” says Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Let me acknowledge all staff, Council, business leaders and community partners who have worked together to make this plan a reality.”
The master-planned community also emphasises the creation and use of greenspace. There will be a new waterfront park with a beach and ecological gardens, respecting the natural shoreline on Lake Ontario. This will connect a series of waterfront parks, including J.C. Saddington Park and Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens. There will also be four green corridors linking the waterfront to Lakeshore Road, consisting of gathering places, parks, and play areas.
The Village Square Central Street Promenade will serve as the spine of the community, drawing foot traffic from Lakeshore Road. The streetscape will be designed to prioritize pedestrian and cyclist use, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. A community centre is also part of the plan, but it’s just proposed at the moment. West Village Partners may partner with YMCA and/or Evergreen in the near future.
We’re excited to see that this site is being transformed and will finally be put to good use! From the late 19th Century to 1927, the site was a Brickworks. Then from 1932 to 1985 it was an oil refinery. The site decommissioning was in 1988.
