West Shore Beach Club Partners With Skate to Great

By Lucas on Nov 24, 2014

The snow is staying on the ground in most parts of the Greater Toronto Area, the Maple Leafs just broke a losing streak, and youth hockey league seasons just started a little while ago. Growing up in Canada, playing hockey is almost a rite of passage. Unfortunately, it can be rather costly for a family to put their child or children in an organized league. When you take equipment and registration fees, getting up early and driving to the rink, and maybe even skating lessons into consideration, the cost adds up quickly. As of 2011, 639,000 children in Canada live in poverty, and more than 300,000 belong to families that rely on food banks. Not every child has the opportunity to play the country’s most loved sport, and that’s why West Shore Beach Club by Summerhill Homes has partnered with charitable organization Skate to Great to provide children and at-risk youth with skates and hockey equipment!

Starting November 26, 2014, the West Shore Beach Club sales office will be accepting new and gently used skates and hockey equipment (like pads, sticks, helmets, etc.). Children aren’t only interested in hockey, some little boys and girls out there dream of being figure skaters! The children who share this dream will be excited about figure skating team Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier being in attendance on November 26 to launch the partnership between the community and Skate to Great. Together, Piper and Paul are Four Continents silver medalists and two-time Canadian national medalists. The West Shore Beach Club sales office will be accepting donations until February 28, 2015.

Skate to Great, based out of Toronto, was established in March 2012 and has since collected and distributed 6,000 pairs of skates to children and at-risk youth. The organization directly supports schools, programs and other charities in Canada. Their primary goal is to provide every child in Canada with the opportunity to skate.

If you have any hockey equipment or skates to donate to Skate to Great, visit the West Shore Beach Club sales office at 9361 Highway 11 in Severn, Ontario any time between November 26, 2014 and February 28, 2015.
