Getting Excited for Wellesley on the Park in Toronto!

By Lucas on Oct 30, 2014

In the spirit of #TBT (Throwback Thursday), we dug into our archives to find a development that has come a long way over the past couple years. Needless to say, there were many that caught our eye, but then we found this photo and we just had to share it!

Recognize that plot of land? You should - the only thing that’s really changed so far is that there is hoarding around the site, but the plans for it are pretty exciting. What you’re looking at right now is 11 Wellesley in Toronto, also known as the site of Wellesley on the Park by Lanterra Developments.

11 Wellesley has been vacant since the 1980s. This photo above was featured on our blog, but first appeared on thestar.com just over two years ago, and it was photographed by Laura Kane. At the time, The Toronto Star was reporting that the City of Toronto was preparing to bid on the 2.1-acre downtown lot because it was owned by the Ontario government.

Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam (Ward 27 Toronto Centre-Rosedale) was urging the city to purchase the land in order to transform it into a park. There was a fear that a developer or numerous developers would purchase it and put up a cluster of condos. While spearheading this initiative, Wong-Tam realized that the City would probably have to cooperate with whoever the top bidder was, but was still trying to get the City to purchase 1.5 acres, leaving a portion of land for a single condo.

Well, Wong-Tam knows her stuff because Lanterra Developments ended up with the land and they are only building one tower, and there is plenty of green space included in the plans. The park will actually be 1.6 acres, just slightly larger than Wong-Tam suggested!

Incredible design at Wellesley on the Park

Lanterra’s renderings for 11 Wellesley are a big jump forward from that photo taken by Kane. The condo tower will rise nearly 60 storeys and boast a unique design by Finnish modern architect Alvar Aalto. The podium will step back with large terraces to gracefully blend with the park, and the ground floor will feature many retails spaces to promote a true pedestrian-friendly environment.

The suites at Wellesley on the Park span from studio to three-bedroom+study, and range from 300 to 996 square feet. A few of the features and finishes include multi-strip engineered hardwood flooring, granite countertops, designer series cabinetry, porcelain and ceramic flooring, Energy Star appliances, and marble counters, deep soaker tubs, and chrome fixtures in the master ensuites.

The amenities can be found on the ground floor and also the fourth and fifth floors. The amenities at Wellesley on the Park cater to spiritual and mental health, socializing, and relaxation, with amenities such as a fully equipped fitness centre, an indoor pool with cold plunge and hot tub, a spa facility with saunas, an outdoor barbecue terrace, and a sophisticated multi-use party room. This condo is also the perfect option for pet owners because there will be a pet spa right in the mezzanine.
