Mississauga Halts New Development Applications

The City of Mississauga has put a temporary halt to all development applications in the downtown core. Recently, council approved a by-law freezing any new development applications in the area.

"This is a defining moment for the City of Mississauga. We needed to take this time-out to study land uses in this area and make sure we're getting it right," said Planning and Building Commissioner Ed Sajecki in a recent press release.

The area of discussion is bordered by Centre View Drive, Rathburn Road East, Hurnontario Street and Webb Drive. 

This new by law is in response to a concern that too many suburban style developments are coming to the area.  The city is hoping to put more of a focus on design, as well as limit the retail and automobile oriented developments.

The goal for the city is to put more of a focus on keeping with its Downtown 21 plan, which is the City of Mississauga's new vision for its downtown core.

“Development in our downtown has to make it a place where people want to be. That is what we’ve outlined in our Downtown 21 Master Plan and it's what the residents of Mississauga want and deserve,” stated Commissioner Sajecki.

The Downtown 21 plan calls for 6 principles upon which the vision for the Mississauga downtown core will be based. Those principles include catalyzing employment, focusing on multiple transportation options, creating an urban place with great public spaces and distinct districts, building with green technologies, creating a ‘Main Street’ district as well as providing a predictable development framework, based on urban design excellence.

This new by-law will allow the city to study what is needed in the downtown core. The city of Mississauga will work with LiveWorkLearnPlay Inc., a urban design firm, to produce a study on the future of the downtown area.
