Walkability: Yonge and Eglinton - 98

By Lucas on Aug 26, 2013

For the last installment of our Walkability features, we visited the Yonge and Eglinton neighbourhood of Toronto - possibly one of the most active neighbourhoods in the city when it comes to new home developments.

Like most neighbourhoods, everyone has a different opinion about the boundaries of the Yonge and Eglinton neighbourhood. So, for the purpose of our adventure, we just walked about a kilometer north of Eglinton along Yonge and then back again. That might not seem like a great distance, but we have to say, Yonge and Eglinton has more along this one kilometer strip than most other neighbourhoods in Toronto.

WalkScore.com gives Yonge and Eglinton a 98, labelling it as a “Walker’s Paradise,” meaning that daily errands do not require a car. This score is a tie for the highest with King West, the first neighbourhood we featured.

The amenities of Yonge and Eglinton

Many of the neighbourhoods that we have visited this month with the highest scores, like St. Lawrence Market and King West, have featured a wide variety of amenities, but both of these were restaurant heavy. You might find some of the best food in the city in these two neighbourhoods, but if you want to shop for clothes at the same time, you might have to wander off to another nearby district.

We can’t say the same about Yonge and Eglinton - it has the perfect balance of retail and restaurants, and both cater to all ages. No matter where you are in the Yonge and Eglinton neighbourhood, you see young couples, old couples, families, and single people.

There are also many cafes, bakeries, pet stores, and even specialty cheese stores in the neighbourhood. As for greenspace, there are a couple parkettes along the main strip, and if you venture further east you will find Sherwood Park, one of Toronto’s highest ranking parks. The trail system through Sherwood Park also serves as a leash-free area for dogs, so if you have a pet, you have a fun place to take them for a long walk!
