Another Trip to FIVE Condos!

By Lucas on Dec 11, 2012

One of our favourite projects in the downtown core is FIVE Condominiums. We always enjoy heading over to check out the steps that MOD Developments and Graywood are taking to bring this cool condo tower to the city, and also maintain the heritage aspects of the site.

With that in mind, we headed out to FIVE Condos to check out some of the work the construction team has put in since our last visit two months ago. We met up with project manager Chris Hawkins, who gave us a breakdown of FIVE’s progress, and filled us in on what to expect in the coming months.

“At this point, we are probably two to three weeks ahead of schedule. This week, it looks like we won’t have any delay, and weather permitting, we should continue to see some good progress over the rest of the month.”

An interesting aspect of FIVE Condos is that once the construction team hits the ground, they will have to take some time bringing in huge steel beams to support the tower, due to the floorplate that the building has.

“Some of the beams are 8’ x 10’ if you can imagine that. They are called transfer beams, and they are massive. We need them to absorb the weight of the upper floors due to the fact that the building’s design leaves no true columns in the building.”

The next step for the construction team is to finish up the lower floors, and then the fun begins as they bring in the massive beams and start tying in the facade to the new building!

“Once we hit ground, we will start to get into a lot of beams between floors one and two. Then we go up to five, which will be home to the massive podium. Once we hit that point, it’s up into the tower section.”

If you’re an owner or soon-to-be owner at FIVE Condos, you have to be excited about the progress that MOD and Graywood have made, and look forward to it taking shape at the corner of Yonge and St. Joseph.
