The winners of the 2015 EnerQuality Awards

By Lucas on Feb 29, 2016

Last week, EnerQuality announced the winners of the 2015 EnerQuality Awards at a sold out Toronto gala. The EnerQuality Awards recognize those in the new home industry who push the boundaries of sustainable, green, and energy efficient design. Therefore, the recipients of these awards are some of the most ideal builders and developers to build our future homes.

For the third time, Mattamy Homes went home with the very prestigious ENERGY STAR for New Homes Builder of the Year - Large Volume award. When the ENERGY STAR program first began, Mattamy Homes was one of the first builders to jump on board, recognizing the need for more energy efficient homes. Today, over 32% of new homes built in Ontario are ENERGY STAR qualified. Midhaven Homes and Jeffrey Homes, both based in Oshawa, won the same award for the mid volume and small/custom categories, respectively.

Another big winner is Minto Group, who won the Ontario Green Builder of the Year award for the second year in a row! This award goes to the builder or developer that best raises the bar in sustainable design overall, from technology to innovation and customer awareness. With so many LEED certified projects, we’re not surprised to see Minto taking this award for the second consecutive time.

One of the biggest winners of the year with three awards was Reid’s Heritage Homes. They received the inaugural Net Zero Builder of the Year Award, as well as Building Innovation - Low-Rise, and Best Green Marketing Campaign of the Year, which is awarded to the builder who did the best job at educating homebuyers about energy efficient homes.

Again, it comes to no surprise that Reid’s Heritage Homes won the Net Zero Builder of the Year Award since they unveiled Canada’s first Net Zero home last year in Guelph! We actually had the opportunity to attend the opening of Reid’s Heritage Homes’ Net Zero home, and we have to say, it was very impressive!

A Net Zero home produces as much energy as it consumes throughout the year using a wide variety of technologies, including solar power, fresh air systems, advanced building enclosures, high efficiency water solutions, ultra efficient electrical, and other home comfort systems.

When Reid’s Heritage Homes opened the Net Zero home for touring, they also announced that they will soon be committing to building ONLY Net Zero homes, proving that energy efficient homes can be built affordably on a large community scale.

When it comes to technical excellence in the mid- and high-rise category, the largest condo developer in the GTA, Tridel, took home the Building Innovation award. Tridel is another developer known for their high quality LEED communities. One of their most highly anticipated Toronto master-plans at the moment is the Bayside Toronto community on the waterfront, which will be LEED Gold certified.
