The dos and don’ts of moving that you need to read

Moving to a different home is one of life’s most stressful tasks. Fortunately, there are precautions you can take to make the experience less daunting. So as you prepare to move into your next home, consider these dos and don’ts:

Do these during your move

Invest in a truck ?

Seven trips back and forth in your mom’s mini-van will save you money during your move, but it will totally prolong the task. Since most young buyers don’t have as many things to move, some of them are trying to find a way around renting a moving truck. Nonetheless, it is a worthy investment, as the increased efficiency of a large truck makes it easier to stick to timelines.

Wrap it up ?

Of all of the anxieties that you will experience on moving day, shattering your prized possessions should not be one of them. Be sure to cushion boxes containing breakables with crumpled newspaper and try wrapping dishes and glasses with clothing. This is also a creative way to store some of your clothes during the move!

Stay organized ?

When you arrive at your empty new home with a truckload of boxes, the unpacking process can initially seem daunting. While you’re packing, start off on the right foot by labeling boxes with their destination in the new home, instead of just including the box’s contents. This will make the unloading process much more efficient. Be sure to label the sides of boxes as opposed to the tops, so they can still be identified even if they’re stacked.

Pack an overnight bag ?

Post-move, you may not feel ready to unpack right away, and you don’t want to sift through box after box just to find your toothbrush at the end of the day. Make it easy on yourself and pack a bag containing all of your essentials for the first night, such as toiletries, pyjamas and a change of clothes.

Start early ?

When you’re making a big move, daylight is your friend. On moving day, be sure to schedule your start time for as early as possible so that you can take your time and fit in any unforeseen obstacles that might invade your move. This way, you can spend the evening unpacking and unwinding in your new home.

Moving dos and don'ts

Don’t do these during your move

Use bags instead of boxes ?

When you’re packing your belongings, resist the urge to throw everything into garbage bags or even tote bags. They are harder to organize and have a tendency to tear, which can cause your belongings to get lost or damaged. Instead, stick to boxes.

Eyeball it ?

Before moving day, take precise measurements of your new home to make sure that all of your belongings will fit. This will help to steer clear of any inconvenient disappointments on move-in day.

DIY ?

Many hands make light work. On moving day, invite friends and family to help out, even if you have hired movers. An extra pair of hands can help with heavy lifting and last-minute packing and an extra pair of eyes can help ensure that nothing gets left behind.

Be camera shy ?

While you pack up your electronics, whether it be your TV or your desktop computer, snap a quick photo of the back-end as a point of reference when you’re rearranging the wires in your new home. Once you get a picture, wrap up the cords and label them with tape to avoid any confusion.

We hope that these tips help make your next move the smoothest one yet!
