With support from family, friends, members of the new home building industry, and the tri-city community, Reid’s Heritage Homes’ ambitious initiative, Take a Ride for MacKids, has been a huge success!
In 2015, the Caring for Little Kidneys Fund was established with the goal of raising $650,000 to build a new, standalone nephrology clinic at McMaster Children’s Hospital.
Tim and Charlotte Blevins started the Caring for Little Kidneys Fund after their daughter Kayla was diagnosed with E. Coli. Adults can recover from E. Coli in as little as a week, but children are at risk of developing life-threatening kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome.
Thanks to the professionals at McMaster Children’s Hospital, Kayla made a full recovery, but the facility in which she was treated was clearly not designed for children. The facility was actually a former patient room and only had room to accommodate two children. If there was an isolation patient like Kayla, the other dialysis machine couldn’t be used by another child in need.
The machine wasn’t even designed for children; it was designed for adults and modified so it could be used by children. There was no room for parents and siblings to visit and stay with patients, and have we mentioned this is the only location in the region offering the life-saving dialysis for children?
Clearly, something needed to be done, and that’s where Tim and Charlotte came in. In July 2017, the new clinic was completed and can now accommodate up to three children, in addition to a private room for isolation patients. The Caring for Little Kidneys Fund also raised enough money to purchase a new dialysis machine specifically designed for infants and children!
Take a Ride for MacKids was a big contributor to the Caring for Little Kidneys Fund and helping it reach its goal. Reid’s Heritage Homes will continue to run the Take a Ride for MacKids event annually to continue to help raise the funds necessary to sustain the clinic and support the acquisition of new technology and equipment. The Fund will also support new programs and initiatives for recovering patients and their families.
