The Selby Coming Soon to Bloor and Sherbourne in Toronto

By Lucas on Oct 14, 2014

It feels like it’s been a couple years since we first heard any news about The Selby condo development by Cityzen, DiamondCorp, and Fernbrook, so we’re pretty excited to have received new renderings of the development, and we’re especially glad to see that the reddish orange exterior is still a part of the design!

Earlier this spring, we asked our readers if Toronto’s skyline needed a splash of colour, and most who responded were in favour of something that would liven up the city scenery. Considering there are no brightly coloured towers currently standing downtown Toronto, The Selby will definitely make a strong impact on the skyline.

“The Selby will create this vision of a red pillar in the sky and join our portfolio of architecturally stunning buildings, such as the Absolute World towers, L Tower and Pier 27,” says Sam Crignano, President of Cityzen. “Not only will The Selby create a stunning architectural statement from the street, but owners will have incredible and unimpeded views in most directions, something that’s becoming hard to come by in downtown Toronto.”

Reaching 50 storeys, The Selby will be one of the tallest (if not the tallest) building at Bloor and Sherbourne. Designed by architect Thomas Kerwin of internationally renowned Chicago-based firm bKL Architecture, The Selby will feature over 500 units and five levels of below grade parking. In addition to the tower units, there will be a limited amount of executive townhomes in the four-level podium.

There will be nearly 20,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenity space, featuring a rooftop pool and barbecue stations, perfect for alfresco dining. The developers are also making a conscious effort to promote alternative modes of transportation by including more than 500 bicycle parking spots. The bicycle parking is very important considering Sherbourne is one of Toronto’s longest streets with a dedicated bike lane running north and south, stretching all the way down to Front Street.

There is also a heritage aspect to The Selby. The brick building on the site is currently known as the Clarion Hotel, but it was originally the Gooderham Mansion, the private home to the Gooderham family. It was eventually redeveloped into an exclusive girls’ school, and then to the residential hotel, where Ernest Hemingway called home for a time. bKL Architecture and the developers are working closely with ERA Architects, heritage and conservation specialists, to ensure that the brick building is properly preserved.

The changing face of Bloor and Sherbourne

Set to rise at 592 Sherbourne Street, The Selby’s location is very unique. The condo will be at the heart of where three very different neighbourhoods meet. If you picture The Selby as a centre point, to the west you have the Upper Jarvis area, to the east you have St. James Town, and then to the north there’s Rosedale.

All of these areas have their own vibe and flare, so it will be interesting to see how The Selby impacts the neighbourhood. Upper Jarvis has a couple schools, some low-rise homes, and a few restaurants like Swiss Chalet Rotisserie & Grill and Druxy’s Famous Deli. St. James Town also has a school and some convenient amenities, such as Howard Pharmacy. And Rosedale is a large, affluent neighbourhood known for its parks, tree-lined streets, and beautiful homes.

One of the best parts of The Selby’s location is that it steps from the Sherbourne Subway Station, where you can hop on the Bloor line and get anywhere in Toronto in a matter of minutes. Only a few stops to the east, you will find the Royal Ontario Museum, the Ryerson University campus, and the breathtaking University of Toronto campus. Of course, if you’re hanging around Bloor and Avenue, you have easy access to all the luxury shopping of Yorkville!

If you want to live in Toronto in a unique and vibrant neighbourhood in a condo that will really stand out, then register for The Selby!
