Restored Heritage Home Unveiled at Mayfield Village

By Lucas on May 06, 2014

On May 3, Aspen Ridge Homes, CountryWide Homes, Greenpark, Marycroft Homes, and Regal Crest Homes unveiled the restored historic Archdekin Heritage Home at their Mayfield Village community in Brampton.

In the 1860s, Peter Archdekin and a group of settlers established the Hamlet of Mayfield Village at what is now the corner of Mayfield Road and Dixie Road. With only 50 people, Mayfield Village became the centre of the area’s farming community, and offered all the amenities a family of that time would need, including a blacksmith, general store, a school, a post office, and a hotel (amenities weren’t so different back then! except for the blacksmith).

The Peter Archdekin Farmhouse is the last remaining building from the original Mayfield Village. The farmhouse was actually the home of James (Jim) Archdekin, a direct relative of Peter Archdekin and one of Brampton’s most popular mayors. He was mayor from 1969 to 1982 and played a big part in the shaping of today’s Brampton.

The five builders held a special plaque dedication, which Mayor Susan Fennell, councillor John Hutton, and other Brampton officials attended.

“The five Mayfield Village developers...have continued the vision of the early settlers with a master-planned community that harkens back to those simpler times of village life,” said Fennell. “Mayfield Village will have a distinct urban feel with the main street, Inspire Boulevard, running through the development that serves the community with various shops and retailers - all within walking distance.”

Spanning from Heart Lake Road to Airport Road, as far north as Mayfield Road and south to Countryside Road, Mayfield Village is currently one of Brampton’s largest residential developments.

“Some say this new Mayfield Village is a modern take on what the Archdekins had set out to do in the late 1860s: make a home for themselves and build a community,” added Fennell.
