Midhaven Homes: A Leader in Environmental Sustainability

By Lucas on Dec 15, 2014

In our recent series about What Homebuyers Want, sustainability was a recurring topic. We highlighted a few builders and developers who are leading the way with green initiatives, discussed some green technology that we may see in homes in the near future, and even showcased the upcoming EnerQuality Awards. One builder that has been applauded by EnerQuality and is an industry leader when it comes to green building is Midhaven Homes.

Here’s a quick rundown of the most recent awards Midhaven Homes has received for their prolific green practices:

  • Natural Resources Canada’s 2014 ENERGY STAR Market Transformation Awards winner, New Homes Builder of the Year

  • The 2013 & 2014 Durham Region Green Builder of the Year

  • EnerQuality’s coveted 2013 ENERGY STAR for New Homes Builder of the Year – Large Volume Builder

Needless to say, Midhaven Homes goes out of their way to build environmentally friendly communities. But what exactly does it mean to be GreenHouse and ENERGY STAR Certified? It means their communities outperform Ontario’s Building Code energy efficiency requirements by 20%. Midhaven takes it even further than expected though. Most homebuyers don’t expect an apple tree, garden plot, or compost station to come standard with their new home, but that’s how Midhaven does things. When homebuyers purchase a Midhaven home, they are asked to select a number of green features from a Fresh Living package. Other features in the package include an outdoor clothesline to save energy by avoiding dryer use, and a push-powered lawnmower, which is another energy saver.

Midhaven’s president and co-founder, Peter Saturno, who started the company with his father at the age of 26, recently received the Ontario Home Builders’ Association’s Lifetime Achievement award. “We are problem solvers, we are an industry that is a catalyst for positive change,” says Saturno. “The New Homebuilding industry leads the country in energy efficiency advances … not because we have to, but because that’s the kind of industry we are; a socially consciousness and responsible industry.”

One of Midhaven’s most recent communities is Breeze, a North Oshawa development that broke ground in 2012, and it is a perfect example of how Midhaven is exceeding expectations with their sustainable features and offerings. “Midhaven deserves to be recognized for their commitment to creating more sustainable communities in Ontario,” says Corey McBurney, President of EnerQuality. “The success of Breeze demonstrates that homebuyers have an appetite for high quality homes. Midhaven’s out-of-the-box approach to sustainable living sets the bar and encourages us all to do better.”

When it comes to home performance, Breeze offers the best. Everything from the insulation to the windows, to electrical, HVAC, plumbing, air quality, and energy management and efficiency are taken into consideration. Every home at Breeze is GreenHouse and ENERGY STAR Certified, so homebuyers can be confident that they are living in an environmentally conscious community.

Breeze is a community of bungalows and 30’ and 40’ two-storey detached homes at Wilson and Coldstream Drive in North Oshawa. The first two phases are sold out, and Midhaven is now collecting registrations for Phase 3 (with 2016 closings).
