With the beginning of the year still on our minds, we’ve noticed that sustainable design in the home industry has surpassed being a trend and is quickly becoming the norm. If it’s not the norm, it’s surely becoming very important to homebuyers, especially of a younger generation. With that in mind, we would like to congratulate Menkes on completing the first LEED Silver home in Halton Hills!

At the end of last year, Menkes, valued partners, and the Mayor of the Town of Halton Hills, Rick Bonnette, assembled for the official ribbon cutting of the LEED Silver home. The home is built within The Enclaves of Upper Canada, which features 184 ENERGY STAR® qualified homes that are all under construction.

“We are very proud to have built Halton’s first LEED Silver home, as well all the homes in The Enclaves of Upper Canada which are ENERGY STAR® homes,” says Steven Menkes, President of Lowrise Residential, Menkes Developments. “The ENERGY STAR® label guarantees that when our customers make what may be the biggest purchases of their lives, they are not only buying homes that are both well-built and will save them money, but also reducing their impact on the environment.”

“Menkes has always strived to be a leader in environmentally responsible residential construction,” continues Menkes. “We were incorporating energy conservation initiatives in our projects long before the current trend towards green development.”

The LEED Silver home was built as part of the Optimum Home Program. Sponsored by Union Gas, the Optimum Home Program involves a group of builders who are dedicated to exceeding energy efficiency requirements set out by Ontario’s Building Code. all of the homes built through the Program are at least 20% more efficient than the Code requires and the homes are verified by an independent third party organization.

"Through the Optimum Home Program, participating builders can solidify their position as influential industry leaders by demonstrating that homes can be built to a higher standard,” explains Dave Simpson, general manager of in-franchise sales, marketing and customer care at Union Gas. “In turn, homebuyers benefit by living in homes that are more comfortable, healthy and durable with lower energy bills throughout the lifetime of their home."

The Enclaves of Upper Canada features a variety of semi-links and fully detached homes in the Norval hamlet of East Georgetown. Some of the energy efficient features in the homes include ENERGY STAR® windows and doors with low-E argon filled glass, high efficiency forced air gas central heating, hot water recovery systems, and upgraded spray foam insulation above the garages and porch ceilings. There is also an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) with an ECM motor. The ERV reduces the need for a humidifier, so it actually saves you water as well!
