As a new year begins, we notice a shift in the interior design world. Spaces are taking on new meaning, as is the mood of décor. Watch interior design move away from white marble and grey colour schemes. In 2018, interior design trends are evolving in a warm, cozy, and character-driven direction.

Listed below we discuss seven interior design trends to watch out for in 2018;

Terrazzo flooring

I will definitely incorporate this trend into my designs in 2018. Love it for both contemporary and traditional applications! Terrazzo is a sustainable material that has been around for centuries. It has proven to be both durable and sanitary.

A non-porous material, it is virtually stain resistant and requires only minimal cleaning. Regardless of your design aesthetic, terrazzo is available in a plethora of materials and colours, thus giving creative freedom to use it in any situation or space. You will see terrazzo popping up with other items too, such as accessories.

Spa-like bathrooms

Spa-like bathrooms are understated and beautiful. Creating a space of tranquility and serenity in your home is beneficial to your health. Try coupling organic shapes, like a raw cut wooden countertop with natural stone. Complement your new spa bathroom with live plants and ambient candle light to complete your space.

Display collections

Beauty is often found in the details. When accessorizing your space, focus on the details this year. Choose pieces that are personal and carry a story. I have always encouraged clients to incorporate collections. This can include items such as your favourite novels, grouping art pieces acquired during your travels, or displaying your collection of old coins or records.

Fill your space with displays of who you are and what means the most to you.

Florals

Florals will be huge in 2018, and with good reason! Believe it or not, florals have a uniquely androgynous characteristic. They add life and charisma to any environment. Try incorporating florals though smaller accessories such as artwork or pillows, or how about a larger approach by pasting up a beautiful, large print floral wallpaper.

Matte black accessories

Matte is the new white. In 2018, we are seeing a jump into the world of matte black accessories. Sprinkle in a few matte black decorative pieces into your kitchen, bathroom, or bedrooms. This is an easy and cost effective way to add a trendy and contemporary splash. We have been specifying matte black faucets in our kitchen and bath designs recently. We will also see more small appliances in matte black this year.

Warm colour schemes

Unlike white that took over the design world in 2017 and the years prior, 2018 is moving towards warm colour schemes. Rich browns, beiges, taupe, and rust will be prevalent in design trends this year. This will lead interiors to a warm, cozy, and homey space you will have a hard time leaving. Think about adding personality to your room with down to earth fabrics to create a feeling of comfort.

More colour in the kitchen

Along with warmer colour schemes, adding more colour to kitchens is going to be big in 2018. The design world is moving away from monochromatic spaces with heavy contrasts, and we are now seeing an influx of colourful granites, laminates, and recycled glass countertops hitting the market.

Pair a uniquely brilliant and colourful countertop with a complementary base cabinet for a winning combination. Looking for an easy fix to add some colour in your all white kitchen? The vibrant geometric backsplash and wood shelf pictured here will uplift your white kitchen and be on trend this year.

Some other trends to expect this year are induction cooktops, cement look materials, taking a seldom used room and making it into a closet, home automation and interesting ceiling design.

Now is the time to embrace your personality and create an element of surprise in your décor. For more inspiration, check out our Pinterest Board – Cheers to a bright outlook for 2018!
