Ever since the formation of Build Toronto, we have seen quite a few of high profile sites sold off to private developers. The projects at 10 York and 154 Front St. East are prime examples of how Build Toronto is contributing to the new home industry.

Metro Hall for sale?

Recently, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford suggested that Build Toronto look at selling Metro Hall. Back in 2001, the City had explored the idea of selling Metro Hall, but the bids they received at the time were less than enticing. Well, we all know how much the real estate game has changed in Toronto over the past decade, and with Metro Hall’s downtown location at John and Wellington, we wouldn't be surprised to see a hefty price tag on it.

So the question is, if Metro Hall does go to market, can we expect it to be retrofitted as a condominium development? As you probably know, retrofits have been very popular in the Greater Toronto Area, especially downtown, because of the lack of affordable, undeveloped land. And Metro Hall isn’t a bad looking building; with a little sprucing up, we think it could serve as a very classy condo.

The History of Metro Hall

Metro Hall was completed in 1992 to house the Municipality of Metro Toronto and its employees. However, with the 1998 amalgamation of the City of Toronto, those employees were moved to Toronto's City Hall. The building does still house City employees, but it’s looking like it may be more affordable to sell the building and seek office space elsewhere.
