The Beach Motel says its Goodbyes

Two years ago, we reported that Empire had purchased a site in the Humber Bay area, the location of the “Beach Motel.” While we eagerly gathered up as much info as we could and fawned over each new rendering, what we were really waiting for was the demolition of the motel, so that “Eau Du Soleil” could start rising. Well, the time has come!

Earlier this week, Paul Golini, the Executive Vice-President of Empire Communities, invited out some media and integral members of the community, including local councillor Mark Grimes, to celebrate this landmark event.

“This is a bittersweet day, the demolition of one of the final beach landmarks. This famous lakeshore beach strip, the Beach Motel, has a lot of history going back to the 1950s,” said Golini. “What we see here is the example of what is going on in many other areas of Toronto; the renewal and revitalization of an area that needs to take the next step. What we are trying to do here at Empire is bring families back to the neighbourhood.”

Mark Grimes, a nine-year councillor who has witnessed many new condominium developments rise in Humber Bay and Mimico, also expressed his thoughts on the day: “It’s a sad day, but an exciting day. It’s the last piece of the former stretch of motels. People would stop here on the way to the CNE or to Downtown Toronto. It was a very important piece of Toronto’s waterfront, and I think it is important that we watch this come down today. Everyone talks about all the condos that are coming to this area, but it’s not just about condos: it’s a great community.”

With the start of demolition, the area has now come full circle, transitioning from its identity as a motel strip of the 1950s to a high-rise condominium community of the 21st century. Eau Du Soleil by Empire Communities will surely be a landmark tower for Humber Bay.
