ArtHaus in Ottawa is only steps away from the famous ByWard Market!

Last fall, we flew to Ottawa for the official groundbreaking and name unveiling of DevMcGill’s ArtHaus, our capital’s latest landmark development. While we were there, we strolled through ByWard Market, which is a lively area within steps of ArtHaus, and that’s what we want to focus on right now!

Before jumping into how great ByWard Market is, we should explain why ArtHaus is such a special development for Ottawa and why it was worth it to fly out there for the unveiling. ArtHaus is part of a larger redevelopment of Arts Court, a former courthouse that was transformed into an arts venue with galleries and performance spaces.

The redevelopment has a number of partners including the City of Ottawa, the Ottawa Art Gallery, the University of Ottawa, DevMcGill, and Groupe Germain. The redevelopment will be doubling the Ottawa Art Gallery’s exhibition space, a luxury Le Germain boutique hotel will be opening in a new tower, and the University will be in charge of the programming at a new 64,000 square foot theatre.

Then there’s ArtHaus, the condo residences which will occupy floors 15 to 23, comprising of only 89 units. DevMcGill is well known in Montreal for their high quality developments, so it’s exciting to see them bringing their reputation to Ottawa for such a high profile project.

After the name unveiling and construction celebration, we ventured into ByWard Market to take in the sights and grab a bite to eat. The Market is one of Canada’s longest running farmers’ markets and features many open-air stands, and is home to many of the best chefs, restaurants, and bakeries in the country.

When President Barack Obama embarked on his first foreign trip as President to Canada’s Parliament Hill, he reportedly made an unscheduled stop in ByWard Market, explaining “If I come to Ottawa and don’t bring back bearclaws from the ByWard Market to my daughters, they’ll never forgive me!” We can’t think of any other bearclaws in Canada that have an endorsement from the President of the United States.

If you’ve been to Ottawa, you know that they have done a very good job at preserving their historical architecture, and ByWard Market is almost like stepping into the past. If you haven’t been to Ottawa, it’s hard to compare the atmosphere to any one spot in Toronto. If we absolutely had to draw a comparison we would say that it’s like a combination of Distillery District and St. Lawrence Market, minus the old distilleries (though we’re in love with both of these areas and there are no substitutes!).

ByWard Market is also a hub for artists, and if you walk around long enough, you will surely stumble upon some amazing gallery spaces. So, it’s amazing that the Ottawa Art Gallery is expanding their space so much at the Arts Court redevelopment; the area will just become even more arts-centric.

As amazing as ByWard Market is, it’s not the only highlight of ArtHaus’ location. The Rideau Centre is literally steps away, as well as the University of Ottawa campus. Downtown and the business district are only 10 minutes away by foot. Speaking of walking, the area has a Walkscore of 98 out of 100, and a transit score of 93! Plus, there is a new LRT that will be running in 2018.
